This past weekend marked a special occasion in SoCal ASLA's history. One year after being asked to partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help bring Colette's Dream to life, ASLA Southern California members joined with over thirty volunteers on May 18th to install a plan designed by our chapter’s Emerging Professionals. Also generously represented to assist were volunteers from NUVIS Landscape Architecture, Home Depot, PBC Companies and Valley Crest Company.
Special thanks to our Emerging Professionals; the forty-five sponsors, which without them this heartfelt project would not have been realized; and also to this year’s Chapter President, Perry Cardoza, whose overwhelming passion for the project guided it to its completion. Seven year old Colette has been granted her wish; a safe, engaging, accessible outdoor space for her to enjoy with her family. Having thus far endured thirty-plus surgeries, and with severe mental- and physical challenges that demand round-the-clock care, she's a beautiful girl who has inspired numerous people to join together in a worthwhile community project.

On April 25th – 27th, Chapter President Elect, Richard Krumwiede, attended the Chapter Presidents Council (CPC) mid-year meeting in Washington DC. Since the CPC meeting is attended by the Presidents and President-elects of each chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, I was fortunate to meet and network with leaders from across the nation. Additionally, I met the San Diego, Sierra and Northern California Chapter’s leaders who were all exceptional people doing their best to serve Landscape Architects in California.
The 2013 Year of Public Service has been established by the American Society of Landscape Architects' (ASLA) Public Awareness Campaign to highlight the wide-reaching public service activities readily performed by landscape architects and to advocate for a higher commitment by all to community service projects.
The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES™) has announced Burbank Water and Power's EcoCampus project has achieved one-star certification - one of only 15 currently accredited and the only industrial site among over 150 in the worldwide pilot program. SITES™ is an interdisciplinary effort by the American

The ASLA Southern California Chapter soon begins a new year of exciting opportunities. There are many opportunities available for our members who want to volunteer. If you are new to ASLA and are looking for ways to get involved, or even if you have a member for many years and feel the time may be right to volunteer -- we have a fit for you! Purchase a Frederick Law Olmsted Video

The video is based on Don Marquardt’s popular live stage presentation of Frederick Law Olmsted’s life and accomplishments, this 37-minute video concentrates on Olmsted’s early life influences, many failures trying to find a successful career, and then his providential partnering with architect Calvert Vaux and their wonderful creation of New York City’s Central Park.
This fascinating and frustrating project not only created one of the most popular parks in the world, but finally launched Olmsted’s glorious career – which he and Vaux named Landscape Architecture.
