Baxter Miller, ASLA
Chapter President
This will be a great new year for me and hopefully Southern California Chapter of ASLA. We have a number of great folks on the board of directors with wonderful ideas. The students are all fired up to make things happen. The profession has had struggles over that past years, we have had to assess the direction of the economy and plot new courses for our futures.
Andy Bowden, ASLA
Chapter Trustee
As we start to wrap up 2011, I want to tell you about some of the very exciting things that have taken place over the course of these past few months with ASLA on both the local as well as national level There is far too much to comment on completely in this small article, so this is a brief summary of some of the more important items that have taken place since the Board of Trustees meeting that was held in Washington, DC this last May.
The 2012 Mentor Program kicks off on Monday,February 27, 2012 at JT Schmidt's in Anaheim. Mentors and mentees are invited for a reception hosted by the ASLA Southern California Chapter.
If you missed the invite and you are participating in the Mentor program, please contact the Chapter at 714-838-3615 for details.

Congratulations to Evan Mather, recently named Principal of AHBE Landscape Architects. With over twenty years of experience in landscape architecture, Evan has led and managed hundreds of successful projects for AHBE and other firms, particularly in the areas of urban design, utilities, public works, and education.
Evan is a licensed landscape architect in California and a member of ASLA. He is also an independent filmmaker, known for his short films about design and architectural issues, which include "So What?" an ASLA award-winning documentary about sustainability. Evan holds a Bachelor of Landscape Arcitecture from Louisiana State University.
The ULI Orange County/Inland Empire, the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) Orange County Chapter and the Southern California Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) joined together on the evening of December 15th, 2011 for our second annual joint holiday networking event. As we did last year, in the spirit of the holiday we also wanted to give back and decided again on Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County as our charitable organization recipient.
Purchase a Frederick Law Olmsted Video

The video is based on Don Marquardt’s popular live stage presentation of Frederick Law Olmsted’s life and accomplishments, this 37-minute video concentrates on Olmsted’s early life influences, many failures trying to find a successful career, and then his providential partnering with architect Calvert Vaux and their wonderful creation of New York City’s Central Park.
This fascinating and frustrating project not only created one of the most popular parks in the world, but finally launched Olmsted’s glorious career – which he and Vaux named Landscape Architecture.
